"Song of My Side" is a monument of Spanish literature, an epic composed by an unknown Hooglar singer. The protagonist of the work is a Spanish knight named Cid, who devoted his life to the liberation of Spain from the power of the Moors.
The song about my Side "was written in the XII century by an unknown Hooglar (as medieval poets were called wandering poets). The only copy survived to our time, recorded in 1207. The first chapter of the epic has not been preserved, only a brief prosaic retelling is known.
The plot of "Song of Side"
As is characteristic of the medieval epic, "Song of Side" tells of the adventures and exploits of a national hero, an idealized representative of chivalry. In the first part of the epic, Sid, a Spanish nobleman-knight, on false accusation falls into disgrace to the king. He expels him from his native Castile, separates him from his wife and daughters. However, Sid does not forget about his duty as a vassal of the king and defender of Spain. He continues to struggle with the Moors, dreaming only of liberating his homeland.
In the second part, Sid regains the king's confidence. He not only successfully fights against the Moors, but also gives part of the booty to the king. Once again believing in Sid's loyalty, the king allows him and his family to settle in Valencia. The king marries the daughters of Sid as a sign of location for the noble infants. Sid does not like the daughters' suitors, but he cannot even imagine going against the will of the king.
In the third part, the focus of the narrative shifts from the hero's struggle against the invaders to confrontation with his unworthy sons-in-law. Noble infants turn out to be cowardly and ignoble people. When a lion escaped from the cage, everyone rushed to defend their master Sid, and his sons-in-law hid. For their cowardice, they were publicly ridiculed. To avenge humiliation, the infants beat the daughters of Sid, their wives. Sid decides to get the punishment legal: he gets the king to appoint a judicial duel. In a duel, Sid's son-in-law is defeated. Justice triumphs, and the national hero achieves deserved wealth and honors.
