Yulia Tymoshenko is a modern Ukrainian politician who has gained the greatest fame in the world as one of the pair of leaders of the 2004 Orange Revolution. Since 2005, she twice served as prime minister. For her activities in this post in 2009, Tymoshenko was sentenced to 7 years in prison.

On April 11, 2011, the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine opened a criminal case against Yulia Tymoshenko on charges of exceeding the powers of the Prime Minister. It dealt with the conclusion in 2009 of contracts unfavorable for the country for the supply of gas from Russia. After about a month and a half, the investigation was completed, and the case was transferred to one of the Kiev district courts. The trial began in court in late June 2011, and on August 5, Tymoshenko was arrested. This happened after the interrogation of one of the witnesses, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, to whom the leader of the Orange Revolution asked questions about his son’s corruption ties and business. The court ruled that in this way it prevents the interview of witnesses and the establishment of truth.
The judicial investigation ended on September 8, 2011, and on October 11 a verdict was announced in which Yulia Tymoshenko was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years in prison with payment of the damage of one and a half billion hryvnias (almost 190 million dollars). The very next day, a new paperwork was launched against the former prime minister - a case that was openly dismissed in 2001. It was then still the future leader of the Orange Revolution was accused of "appropriation of other people's property" during his tenure as president of the industrial and financial corporation United Energy Systems of Ukraine. This company was created by Yulia Tymoshenko together with her husband Alexander in 1991 and for some time was the largest importer of gas from Russia.
The imprisonment of a politician who lost only 3% of the vote in the last election caused a great resonance both among Ukrainians and in world politics. Especially after the health of the 52-year-old “orange lady” worsened. The first persons of the states and political parties of the most different directions expressed their disapproval of its content in conclusion.
