Saint Luke - who is he
Saint Luke was canonized only in 1995, but he was asked for healing and revered by him as a great healer long before the Orthodox Church recognized him as a saint.
Saint Luke, nee Valentin Voyno-Yasnetskiy, was the son of a pharmacist. After graduating from the Kiev Medical Faculty, in 1904, he was sent to the Far East, where the Russo-Japanese War was fought. It was there that the young doctor received his first experience in conducting surgical operations.
Before each operation, Valentine requested God's mercy for himself, for the sick, and in his life, the name of the Lord was always on his lips. When his wife passed away from pulmonary tuberculosis in 1917, Valentin completely left for work and religion, repeatedly spoke at the meetings of theologians, and then took the priesthood. For his fierce adherence to Christianity, Valentin was sentenced to exile by the Soviet authorities three times, but even there he continued to heal and perform complicated surgical operations in completely unsuitable conditions.
In 1942, Luke received the rank of archbishop, and a little later, for achievements in medicine, he was even awarded the Stalin Prize.
