The original version of the film is called "Hugo", it was the Russian distributors who renamed it "Time Guardian" to increase fees, intrigued by a hint of a fantastic development of the plot. The little boy Hugo was orphaned early - at first his mother died, then his father died in the fire, leaving only a notepad with incomprehensible drawings and a mysterious mechanical robot. For many years he tried to bring this car back to life with Hugo, but did not have time. Now the boy is obsessed with the idea of fixing a mechanical person. It seems to the orphan that this is the last thread that connects him with his father. And if the robot comes to life, it will transmit a message from the deceased father.

The kid lives at the huge Montparnasse train station in Paris. Here he was settled by his only relative - an uncle-alcoholic who works as a watchmaker. But then he disappeared somewhere. And Hugo continues to support life in a large train station clock. And he tries so that no one would guess that there is no real keeper. He is especially frightened by a meeting with a brutal station ranger, a lame war veteran who catches little tramps and sends them to a shelter.
