Monogamy is considered normal in most modern societies. It is still not known exactly when monogamy first appeared. However, for example, in some eastern countries (mainly Muslim), the tradition of polygamy is still preserved.

Monogamy was observed in the Ancient World. There is no single correct point of view on this issue, but most scientists agree that still humanoid monkeys used this form of living together. The behavior in a pack of humanoids was different from most other species.
If a person developed along the path, for example, of the same lions, then he would hardly have managed to survive. The fact is that the responsibility of one male for one female significantly facilitates the process of raising children. In addition, men were very valued in ancient tribes and therefore they could not arrange constant battles for women. It was much easier to choose one female and live with her.
In history
Throughout history, this practice has only been confirmed. Since men have long occupied a dominant position in society, it was on their shoulders that responsibility for the fate of the family was placed. To feed several wives and children at once is a very difficult task. Especially if a person was not in any higher strata.
For example, from the myths of Ancient Greece and Rome, you can find out that the locals were also inclined to the idea of monogamy. They could have several concubines or servants, but marriage was always with only one person. By the way, same-sex marriages were then common.
Then came the turn of religion. Christianity and many other faiths were categorically against polygamy. And since most European countries supported precisely such religious views, then polygamy in this region soon disappeared altogether.
