Biography
Born Matthew Modine in the state of California, in the city of Loma Linda in 1959. His parents worked in the theater, but not actors: mom was an accountant, and dad was a manager. They had six children, Matthew was the youngest. His childhood passed in Midvale, because the whole family moved to this city.
It was there that he saw a documentary about how a movie was made, and it shocked him. Since then, he never ceased to dream about how to graduate from school and go to study as an actor.
Matthew studied at a Catholic school, at the same time was engaged in dancing - he believed that this would help him in his future career. And soon he had the opportunity to begin his career in the cinema: he went through a casting in the project "Our City", where he was given the role of George Gibbs.
Movie career
Starting an acting career is rarely easy. As a rule, young artists have few roles, which means little money. So it was with Matthew: when he entered the drama school, he had to work as a cook in a restaurant in order to save money for his studies and at least somehow survive.
The actor considers Steve's role in the film "Baby, It's You" (1983) to be his real debut. Then he was twenty-four years old, and it seemed that now everything would go as he dreamed.
Indeed, this year brought him an award in Venice for his role as Billy in the film Losers (1983). The following year brought Modine a collaboration with Diane Keaton and Mel Gibson in the Mrs. Soffel film. This is a powerful picture of unexpected and hopeless love between a condemned to death and the wife of a prison guard. A thin and deep love story touched the hearts of the audience and received two nominations for prestigious awards.

The film was also praised by the audience and the Grand Prix of the Cannes Film Festival jury.
