short biography
Yermolova’s pedigree consisted of creative people, and the girl inherited the talent.
Her grandfather, being in the hopeless status of a serf, was a violinist. But, having received freedom, without hesitation went to the theater, where he worked until the end of his days. Father tried his hand on stage, then wrote vaudeville. However, he settled on the calmest, but no less interesting profession - the prompter.
Mary was born in July 1853. I spent all my childhood in the theater, where I watched with interest the rehearsals, preparations and performances. Perhaps this helped to awaken her artistic gift.
Already at the age of 9, Yermolova began studying at the theater school. Her parents sent her to a ballet class, but the girl received neither pleasure nor results.
The father supported his daughter as best he could, and then he even turned to one of the teachers for additional lessons. But Ivan Samarin, having authority, issued a verdict - the child has no talent. According to the connoisseur, if Maria does not stop doing this business, she will spend her whole life in the crowd.
This girl was not upset, because she was inextricably following the game of the best actors and gaining experience.
The girl received her first small role in 1866. For the vaudeville "The Groom for Hot" was needed sweet, young and at the same time
flirty heroine. Maria was better suited for this than anyone, but still did not receive praise and respect.
Later, Maria Nikolaevna got the opportunity to replace the ill main actress in the play "Emilia Galotti". And then came the hour of glory. A girl who was barely 17 years old was clapped so that she had to encore 12 times.
After graduating from college, Ermolova easily got into the Maly Theater team and received a set of roles for comedic and romantic heroines. But in each of them she added her own note of tragedy, irony and mystery.
The older Maria Nikolaevna became, the more often she received more serious and deeper roles.
One of the highlights of the actress’s life is her own performance, in which the play “Sheep Spring” opened a new direction in theatrical creativity - the “era of romance”.
She was fond of Ermolova and reading poetry. Finding small breaks between rehearsals, she shone on the stage, voicing the words of Pushkin, Nikitin, Nekrasov.
