Leonid Slutsky is known to all football fans in Russia as one of the best coaches in the modern history of this sport. How did he become a famous coach, and what clubs did he coach?
Children and teenagers of Leonid Slutsky
Leonid Viktorovich Slutsky was born and raised in the city of Volgograd. It was there that he was born in May 1971 in the family of a kindergarten teacher and master of sports in boxing. At the age of six, his father died, and raising his son completely fell on his mother's shoulders.
From childhood, Leonid stood out for his mental abilities. Therefore, studying at school was very easy for him. In parallel with her, Lenya studied in the football section. As a result, he finished school perfectly. And then he entered the Institute of Physical Culture in his native city.
While studying at the university, Leonid successfully acted as a goalkeeper in the Zvezda youth team and showed good results. He was promised a great future, which was cut short by an accident. Leonid from childhood was very responsive and kind, and when the neighbors asked to get their cat from the tree, he could not refuse. But the young man fell off a tree and received numerous injuries and fractures. After a year of rehabilitation, Leonid could no longer play football professionally. At the same time, he graduated from the institute with honors and entered graduate school. From this moment, his coaching career begins.
Coaching career of Leonid Slutsky
Slutsky began coaching at age 22, when he gathered teenagers under his banner and created the Olympia team Volgograd. These young men eventually turned into good footballers, and the team was able to win the Russian Cup in 1999 among amateur groups.
After that, Leonid Slutsky went to work in the Elistin Uralan. At first it was a double, which under his leadership took second place among the teams of the Russian championship. And then he led the main staff of the club, but the money in Elista ended and the team ceased to exist.
And the young coach went on promotion. In 2005, Slutsky headed FC Moscow. After two seasons, the team took 4th place in the Premier League, and for the first time guaranteed themselves participation in the UEFA Cup. At the same time, Slutsky was fired. But a good coach was not lost and signed a contract with Samara Wings of the Soviets. In this team, Leonid worked for two seasons and with him the club took sixth place in the championship. But in the second season, everything changed, and the team’s results deteriorated. Then Slutsky decided to leave the Wings of the Soviets and in 2009 headed CSKA.
It was a big step forward for Slutsky, and the army team found a coach for many years. Under his leadership, CSKA for seven seasons was able to become the champion of Russia three times and gain two victories in the Cup of the country. In this case, the team never fell below third place.
In 2015, Slutsky began to train the Russian national football team in parallel with the army team. But participation in the 2016 World Cup cannot be called successful. After graduation, Leonid resigned as national coach.
Further, Slutsky decided to try himself abroad and headed Hull City from England. But at his post he lasted only six months. The results of the team were not impressive and decided to part with it.
Six months later, Slutsky moved to Holland and headed Vitesse. Right now, starting from July 1, 2018, Slutsky trains this club.
