Sergey Vladimirovich Loznitsa is today a fairly popular Ukrainian documentary filmmaker, who was born on September 5, 1964 in the Brest region (Belarus). In the Ukrainian city of Kiev, he graduated from high school and entered the Polytechnic Institute at the Department of Mathematics, Department of Control Systems. In 1987, Sergei successfully graduated from the institute and defended his diploma.
For the next four years, Loznitsa worked at the Institute of Cybernetics as a research fellow, where he was involved in the development of decision-making systems, expert systems, and artificial intelligence problems. In parallel with scientific activity, Sergey worked as a translator of the Japanese language. But still, Sergey Vladimirovich decides to change his profession and enters the department of film directing in VGIK (All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography) in 1991. And already in 1997 he finished it with honors.
After graduating from the institute, Loznitsa was not able to shoot game pictures. Since 2000, he began working in St. Petersburg in a documentary film studio. The first script of the film "In the Fog", based on the story of Vasily Bykov, Sergey Vladimirovich wrote only in 2001. In the same year, Sergey emigrated with his family to Germany. There were plenty of reasons to leave: it was connected with work, and also Sergei was madly anxious to know the world.
He often repeats that when starting to shoot a movie, one should be absolutely ready to take on great responsibility. Sergei collects pieces of Soviet newsreels in parts, he draws his archival materials from a documentary film studio. Filming most often takes place in the provincial cities of the country. Loznitsa, to this day, continues to write scripts and shoot documentaries, is a laureate of the Russian national awards "Laurus" and "Nika", and the holder of international awards.
