On April 4, 2011, Barack Obama, the Democratic President, officially announced his intention to run for a second term from the state of Illinois. In response, the Republican party nominated three candidates: former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Newt Ginrich, Congressman Ron Paul and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
In the process of the election race, which started in early 2012, Ginrich first suspended his campaign. Thanking supporters for their support, he left the game, leaving two other Republicans to compete with Obama. And soon Ron Paul followed suit. Stating that “getting a chance at success will require spending tens of millions of dollars that we simply don’t have, ” Paul, according to political analysts, went into the shadows to give more chance to Barack Obama’s main rival in the 2012 US presidential election, Mitt Romney.
Former Massachusetts Governor Romney is a hereditary politician who graduated from the legendary Harvard University and holds a doctorate in law. Mitt does not hide his religious beliefs: he belongs to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is a Mormon. Despite the fact that among the residents of the United States there is an ambiguous attitude towards representatives of this religion, Romney's beliefs can play to his advantage. So, recently the Republican has sharply criticized gay marriage, which is going to officially endorse Democrat Obama. This statement brought Mitt the support of conservatives, of which there are many in the States, especially in the central part of the country.
The sympathies of America, which promotes traditional family values, lie on the side of Romney and thanks to his strong marriage. During the campaign, Mitt and his wife Ann widely celebrated the 43rd anniversary of family life; the couple raised five sons. At the time of the election, Romney is 65 years old: by American standards, he is in the prime of life and is confident that he will become the president of the United States.
