Musical instruments are used to extract a variety of sounds. There is a division of musical instruments into several main groups according to the method of sound production, material of manufacture and sound source.

Instruction manual
1
One of the largest groups is wind instruments or “aerophones”. These include instruments in which the sound source is the fluctuation of the column of air in the barrel (tube). In the classical symphony orchestra, wind musical instruments are divided into copper (horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba) and wooden (oboe, flute, bassoon, clarinet). There is also a more detailed classification by design and methods of sound extraction.
2
Metallophones include all musical instruments, whose main element is keys or plates, on which it is necessary to beat with a special hammer. In this group there is a division into two subgroups. A variety of gongs, bells and vibraphones are called self-sounding instruments, in which the metal body itself acts as a sound source, the sound is extracted from it with sticks, hammers and special percussion instruments (in the case of a bell, for example, the tongue acts as such a percussion device). The second subgroup includes instruments such as a xylophone, sound from it can be extracted only with the help of constant mechanical action with special hammers.
3
Another large group of musical instruments is strings. According to the method of sound production, they are divided into plucked (guitar, harp, harp, balalaika), bowed (cello, violin, kemancha, gidzhak), drums (cymbals), plucked keys (clavichord and harpsichord) and percussion keys (piano, piano). This is a very large group. In classical symphony orchestras, stringed musical instruments are usually understood as stringed ones.
4
Keyboard instruments share a common feature - the presence of a keyboard and keyboard mechanics. These instruments often intersect with other groups, for example, a piano is simultaneously a string and keyboard instrument.
5
To extract sound from percussion musical instruments, as you might guess from the name, a beat is required. In such instruments, a sound source can be a membrane, a solid body, or even a string. There are percussion instruments with an undefined pitch, they include tambourines, castanets, drums, and with a certain pitch, they include timpani, xylophones and bells.
6
To musical instruments include those in which sound occurs as a result of the generation and conversion of various electrical signals. Such instruments can imitate various classical musical instruments, while they usually have an interesting peculiar timbre. These include electric guitars, electric organs, theremin, oximetone and others.
