There are several types of Orthodox holidays. For example, depending on who the day is dedicated to, holidays are Lord's, Mother of God, holidays of angels and saints.
A special place in the church calendar is Easter. The bright Resurrection of Christ is the main triumph of Orthodoxy and stands apart from all other days.
There are 12 major (twelve holidays). These days are a recollection of real historical events from the life of the Lord or the Virgin. These events have turned the tide of human history. For example, the Nativity of the Mother of God and the Nativity of Christ, the Transfiguration of the Lord, the Meeting of the Lord, the Introduction to the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Ascension of Christ and several others. The number of twelve includes the holidays of the Holy Trinity and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Such days are highlighted in bold in the Orthodox calendar.
The solemnity is also distinguished by great holidays. They are highlighted in bold black on the church calendar. These include such days as the Protection of the Mother of God, the Beheading of the Head of John the Baptist and several others.
A festive day dedicated to angels is also singled out. So, on November 21, in a new style, the Church remembers all angelic ethereal forces. There are other days when angels are remembered.
Days of remembrance of saints are also special holidays in the Christian tradition. The veneration of holy people goes far back to antiquity. For centuries, solemn celebrations have been held for some of the saints of God. For example, Nicholas the Wonderworker, John the Theologian, Sergius of Radonezh and other great saints.
