The patron saint is given to every person at baptism. If a person is not baptized, he has not only a patron saint, but also a guardian angel. The feast in honor of the patron saint is called name days or, according to the church, namesake. This holiday does not have to coincide with the person’s birthday.

Instruction manual
1
At baptism, each person is called a church name. It is given in honor of one of the saints, and it is this saint who becomes the heavenly patron of man. At present, when a person is baptized, as a rule, he already has a name, then the saint is chosen in the holies, in whose honor the confession will take place. This is done as follows: if there are several saints with the desired name, the church calendar determines the day closest to the birthday of the baptized person in memory of the saint with that name.
2
It is this saint who becomes the holy heavenly patron of the baptized, and the day of his memory, determined by the calendar, becomes the day of the angel, or name day. The same rule applies if a person has already been baptized, but does not remember or does not know in honor of which saint he was called.
3
Do not forget that name day is not a birthday, but a church holiday, a day of remembrance of the holy patron saint. A few centuries ago in Russia, birthdays were not celebrated at all, name days were celebrated instead.
4
If the baptized bear names that are not in the clergy of the Orthodox Church, then this may cause some difficulties (for example: Victoria, Yegor, Arthur, Eduard, etc.). If there is a similar name in the holy calendar, suitable in meaning, then the problem is easily resolved. So Svetlana in baptism will bear the name Photinia ("photo" Greek - "light"), and Victoria will be called Nika (from the Greek "Nick" - "victory"). But in other cases, when it is impossible to pick up an analogue, the choice of a name is given to the parents or the baptized person.
5
According to ancient tradition, on the day of your namesake you must go to church, pray, confess and partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. You can order a prayer service to your holy patron saint.
6
Often confused are the heavenly patron and guardian angel. This is not worth doing, because an angel is an incorporeal spirit that is relentlessly located near a person on his whole life path from baptism to death. He protects from evil and helps in the creation of good deeds. Whereas the patron saint is a saint or saint, who are famous for their exploits in spiritual life, whose names are given to people at baptism. It is to them that a person should turn with prayers and requests.
