Instruction manual
1
At the time of its formation on April 4, 1949, NATO had twelve representatives. Among them were the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Iceland, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, Luxembourg. The composition of the organization expanded six times: in 1952 (Greece, Turkey), 1955 (Germany), 1982 (Spain, which does not participate in the NATO military organization), 1999 (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic), 2004 (Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia, Slovakia) and in 2009, when Albania and Croatia were included.

For all the years of existence, the composition has changed due to the withdrawal of states twice - in 1966 France left the military organization at NATO (returned in 2009), in 1974 Greece, but six years later returned to NATO. Today, the Organization includes 28 states. The official languages of NATO are English and French. Since 2009, the Secretary-General has been Danes Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who until 2001 was the head of the Danish government from 2001 to 2009.
3
According to Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, the organization was formed as a transatlantic forum, which is called upon to hold consultations on resolving issues that threaten the security of the countries that are its members. The allied states, according to the treaty, are obliged to provide protection against aggression against any country that is part of this military-political alliance. NATO's strategic concept also boils down to positioning itself as the foundation of stability in the Euro-Atlantic region, active crisis management, and the course towards comprehensive partnership with other countries of the Euro-Atlantic region.
4
NATO headquarters is located in Brussels. All decisions are taken unanimously in the presence of all representatives of NATO member states. The highest body is the NATO Council (North Atlantic Council).
