Despite the fact that the rule about testing unstressed vowels is familiar to everyone from the school bench, the question of how to spell some words correctly arises quite often.
So, if you want to test unstressed vowels, you need to change the word so that the syllable with the letter you doubt is under stress. For example: water - water.
Although it is more convenient to use the root word. For this, various forms of other parts of speech are applicable, for example:
- Gorodskoy - Gorod;
- Tighten - screw;
- Forget is a chill.
Often it is difficult to check unstressed vowels because of the different spelling of a word depending on its meaning. Then you should turn to the context - the content of the sentence in order to understand which word should be written. For instance:
- "Zap..vat" can be found in the sense of "start a song", and how to "drink a drink." Check in this case, you can use the words "drink" and "sing", but only based on the contents of the text.
- In order to correctly spell the word "ghost …", you should accordingly understand what is meant by it. For example, a ghost is a noun from the verb “lead, ” and a ghost is from the verb “ghost, ” the test word for which is to see.
It is not possible to check words borrowed from foreign languages, since their different forms often have different vowels.
Unstressed vowels in the root of perfect verbs should not be checked with their own imperfect forms. For example, it is impossible to check the word “late” with the form “late”. The adverb "late" is used for this.
Of course, it is impossible to verify absolutely all unstressed vowels encountered, because many words have no test variants. And among those you will surely find similar homophones - words that, with the same sound, are written in different ways. An example is:
- A company as an organization and a campaign as a set of events carried out for a specific purpose.
- The same words “sing” and “drink”.
- Many words with the prefixes "at" and "pre", from the change of which the meaning of what is written or said also changes.
In such cases, context should again be addressed. But many unstressed vowels should just be remembered, or you should consult the dictionary regularly to ensure that you have spelled the word correctly.
