This holiday is celebrated every year on July 14 - it was on this day in 1992 that the peacekeeping forces stopped Georgia’s three-year military operations against South Ossetia. During the conflict, thousands of Ossetians were killed, and even more were driven out of their homes.
The difficult political and economic situation of South Ossetia forced the peacekeeping forces of Russia and North Ossetia to act as a buffer between the warring parties, as a result of which four countries signed the Agreement on the settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict, assuming the obligations of peaceful existence.
According to tradition, the celebration of this event begins with the laying of wreaths at the site of the tragic death of Russian peacekeepers. On August 8, 2008, in the Upper Town, they took upon themselves the entire blow of the Georgian troops, which violated the 1992 Sochi Agreement, their commitments and all the norms of international law. Very often, various events are held as part of the celebration, the purpose of which is to help the families of the dead peacekeepers.
Also on July 14, a parade is held with the participation of representatives of the government of South Ossetia, the presidential administration and peacekeepers, demonstrations and ceremonies. On this day, the president of the country visits the families of the dead peacekeepers, expresses his gratitude to everyone who participated in the resolution of the grave Georgian-Ossetian conflict, and reminds all residents of the significance of Peacekeeper Day.
Residents of South Ossetia gather in the main squares of cities and centers of the Republic to take part in various cultural and recreational activities. And the rally ends with a rally and a concert with the participation of national pop stars, which are held on Theater Square in Tskhinvali.
