Do you need to clarify data on your seniority? Or do you make the family tree of your family? In a word, you need information from the archive. And since she is needed, she should be requested. If you don’t have accurate information about the place of events, let's say you are investigating the fate of a long-deceased relative whose life path is not well known to you, send a request to the Federal Archival Agency. But if the geography of the search is clear to you, it is better to send a request to the archive of the region in which the events of interest to you took place.

1
Make a request statement in a free form, but be sure to indicate in it: - your name, full postal address, contact phone number and e-mail; - the subject of the request, as well as the period of time to which the information you are interested in; - all the facts that you know on the topic of the request, stated clearly and clearly, using exclusively normative vocabulary; - the form and methods of receiving a response (regular mail, e-mail); - an indication of where you have already addressed on this issue (if there was one).
2
Send a request to the regional archive you need by Russian Post by registered mail with delivery confirmation, or by e-mail. You can, if necessary, specify the contact addresses and phone numbers of regional archives on the website of the Federal Archival Agency (Rosarchive). The site also has a special form for sending requests directly to the Federal Archives.
3
Wait for a response to your request. Any response to socio-legal requests must follow, at most, 30 days after the registration of your application. If the deadline for fulfilling your request is extended, archival workers will need to notify you.
4
Repeat your request if no response has been received for 30 days. Perhaps your statement was simply lost. If no response has been received, ask the region’s archive management agency for the region you need to know why your appeal was left unattended.
5
Keep in mind that the archive may refuse to provide you information. But even in this case, archival workers must send you a written refusal in writing within 15 days.
6
Appeal this refusal if you consider it unlawful by submitting an application to the head of the Federal Archives, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, or the court. Be sure to attach a copy of the denial to the application.
note
For social and legal requests, information from Rosarchive is provided free of charge. Such requests include certificates confirming seniority, military service, education, awards, social benefits, etc. Thematic and genealogical requests are processed on a paid basis. Also, urgent requests are processed for money and repeated information from the archive is provided if the original answer was lost by you.
