The historical and cultural heritage of any state is not something "long gone and forgotten": it is food for the mind, the experience of previous generations and, most importantly, the reasons why today looks like this. After all, life did not arise out of nowhere - it systematically developed over the many years that today make up the "inheritance" of a nation.

1
Any culture requires protection and preservation. "Nationality" consists of the realization that a person belongs to some kind of strength, to a society of people that is a value: every young person must understand the greatness of his nation. The legacy in this context is all the talented people who have ever lived in this country, all the politicians, all the victories and all the imperishable masterpieces created by "close" - fellow countrymen. If someday the nation forgets about all the influence it has had on the world, it will simply cease to be a nation. It is difficult for a particular person to influence the preservation of values, the state should do this (create support funds, museums, libraries and narrowly targeted institutions), however, the fact that every citizen will know and study the heritage of his homeland is already a great achievement.
2
Legacy is important to carefully analyze. In particular, this concerns the history of the state: it is the experience of previous generations; mistakes that modern people should learn from. The simplest example is World War II. It turned out to be a monstrous result of the egoism of many states and led to irreparable consequences. However, as long as the population of the Earth remembers what happened, it will not allow a similar situation to happen again. On the other hand, it is worth “erasing” an event from people's memory, as it immediately risks becoming a reality again. In addition, the analysis of history allows you to learn to see the cause and effect in each event, which is especially important: because then, people will be able to perceive today as the direct cause of tomorrow, and this will increase the consciousness of each individual person. The best way of analytics available to every person is to search for the mistakes of historical persons. For example, form an opinion that led the Soviet Union to collapse, and who had to behave differently to avoid this.
3
Most importantly, disseminate information about the culture and history of the nation. Modern society is built in such a way that information may well exist and be in demand only by a few people on the planet. Therefore, it is very important that residents of any state receive information about the past of their country. Moreover, "open access" in this case is not enough: not everyone is interested in issues of this kind on their own. That is why school curricula should be based on cultural heritage - so that students from early childhood (albeit not on their own initiative) know about all the great people to whom they belong. To spread ideas, it is worth organizing exhibitions and festivals of folk culture; celebrations on national holidays; to conduct classroom hours in schools and universities, and for older people - public lectures, possibly on the streets.
