Months used to have a different name. In the old days, they were always associated with weather conditions and changes occurring in nature. It is easy to list how our ancestors called the months.
Instruction manual
1
January. This month, our great-grandfathers dubbed the "section". This is due to the fact that already in this cold winter period, villages began to prepare for field work coming in the spring. The felling of trees began. This was necessary to create a decent arable land on the site of the forest.
2
February. Our ancestors called the months according to the anthropogenic factor. Trees cut down in January dried up in the places of the log house. Hence the name "dry." February also had a different name - “fierce”, because there were no such severe frosts in any other period.
3
March. In relation to nature, March was a rather cruel period of time. People began to burn trees that had been so carefully cut down before. The ash after this fire was used as fertilizer for the soil. Due to the latter fact, March has been dubbed "Berezozol."
4
April. The names of the months were not always invented in honor of certain works. For example, in April the snow finally melted, the buds swelled on the trees. Various herbs began to spike on the ground. Therefore, the name "grass" was quite justified.
5
May. Spring smoothly turns into summer, the sun bakes in a completely different way. Whole fields of flowers grow around. Mental rise is observed among residents of cities. For this connection of nature with the mood of man, May was called "pollen."
6
June. This month bore two names. The first, “worm, ” was associated with red. In the past, this shade meant beauty. His second name, izok, was justified by the behavior of insects. So, in June, grasshoppers begin to chatter, sing songs.
7
July. The names of the months in our ancestors echoed the flowering of certain plants. In July, limes bloom rapidly, and the bees, in turn, become active collectors of honey. On this fact, the month was called "sticky."
eight
August. For many nations, the end of summer was accompanied by a traditional harvest. Russia was no exception. Ripe ears of corn were cut with powerful sickles. Therefore, two names appeared in August: "sickle" in honor of the guns and "stubble" in honor of the process itself.
9
September. The first month of autumn could not remain without a logical and beautiful name. The leaves on the trees naturally changed their color to gold. The same thing happened with drying grass. As a result, the month was called "yellow."
ten
October. During this period, autumn comes into its own. Leaves quickly fly around, rains plentifully. The streets get viscous and dirty, everywhere puddles. For high humidity and the appearance of trees, October had two names - "dirt" and "leaf fall".
eleven
November. The name of this month does not immediately become clear - "chest". But our ancestors called it so on the basis of their own observations. Snow in November is just starting to fall. But the first frosts have already thundered, turning viscous mud into ice clods. These lumps were then called breasts.
12
December. The first month of winter met people with a cold. The warmest things instantly became necessities. But besides the cold, the children were waiting for the long-awaited snow. Therefore, this month was called nothing more than "snowflake" or "jelly".
note
Many speakers of Slavic languages still use these names of the months.
