Igor grew up a hardworking and inquisitive boy, actively participated in school life. In 1954, along with a certificate of secondary education, he received a silver medal. The young man decided to continue his studies within the walls of the Ural Polytechnic. With the choice of future specialty and great career plans, Woodpeckers decided as early as adolescence: he made radio receivers, sound recorders, and participated in the radioification of the school. He continued to demonstrate his inventions at the university. The most unusual was the walkie-talkie, which connected the student with relatives at a distance of 43 kilometers.

Passion for tourism
The first time Igor went camping with his older brother when he was in 7th grade. His journey was so astounding that tourism became his second great passion after radio technology. After finishing the 2nd year, he became a member of the regional tourist team and took part in trips of the highest degree of difficulty. Classmates noted his ability to solve the most difficult situations, his willingness to help at any time. However, as the leader of the group, he became a tough commander, not everyone liked it. Igor listened to criticism and tried to change.
Famous hike
In 1957, the young man was appointed to lead the tourist group of the institute. The team included guys and girls with excellent physical training and personal qualities. In extreme conditions of a campaign any trifle could cost a life. Woodpeckers prepared their wards for a difficult winter campaign, which they planned to devote to the 21st Party Congress in 1959. Students had to overcome 300 kilometers along the northern edge of the Sverdlovsk region, and then climb the peaks of Otorten and Oyka-Chakur. The campaign received the third highest category of complexity. The group included students and graduates of UPI. Together with Igor, Zina Kolmogorova got into the group. In the personal life of Dyatlov, a classmate played an important role.
On January 23, the group left for Serov, then crossed the train to Ivdel. From there, the path lay in the village of Vizhay and further into the village of the 2nd Northern Mine - the beginning of the route. Here the team was left by one of the participants, Yuri Yudin, who had a sore leg, and he could not continue on his way. Further, the chronology could be traced only from the diary entries of the group. On January 31, the group stopped at the foot of Mount Holutchahl, which, translated from the native language of the Mansi, means "mountain of the dead." After spending the night the next day, they climbed a mountain and set up camp.
The return of the group to Vizhay was planned for February 12, three days later - to Sverdlovsk. When the guys didn’t get in touch at the appointed time, the search for the group began, which lasted several months. Soon, search engines found snowy tents with things, but tourists were not found nearby. Their bodies, on which there was only underwear, were found in the following days and in May, when snow fell. Igor Dyatlov and members of his group were buried in Sverdlovsk.
