Ian Manzies Banks, a modern Scottish writer who wrote in the genre of science fiction, was called one of the best science fiction writers of the century. His works were used as the basis for television shows, radio programs and scripts for films. He created under the pseudonyms "Iain M. Banks" and "Iain Banks".
Biography
Ian Banks was born in Scotland, in the city of Dunfermline, in 1954 and was an only child. His father was a sailor, his mother was a professional athlete.
Ian had a lot of relatives - a large Scottish family with aunts, uncles and others. After school, he entered the University of Stirling and graduated with a diploma in philosophy and English philology. The student did not have enough money for all the needs, so during the holidays he didn’t work as a nurse, a field worker, a gardener or even a janitor.
Ian had an independent, freedom-loving character, and he decided that he needed to learn more about the world. And for this I went to travel: first, hitchhiking all over Europe, and then to the USA.
On the way I worked where I had to, right up to the British Steel technician, and all the time I watched, thought, absorbed the information. While ideas of his creations just arose.
For a while he returned to Scotland, and then again left to stay in the midst of people and events and to get new material for thought. True, while this was an unconscious process, because he had not yet begun to write at that time. However, he knew for sure what he would write.
Writer career
In 1979, Ian moved to London, where he worked as a clerk at a law firm and began writing his first fantastic stories. And in 1984, his first novel, The Aspen Factory, was released, and Banks quit his job to devote himself entirely to writing.
In 1987, his book “Remember Phleb” was published, which marked the beginning of the famous cycle “Culture”.
In total, Banks published twenty-six books during his lifetime, and another one was released after the death of the writer in 2013.
Since 1990, Banks began conducting writing workshops at the university, where he used to be a student. The teacher turned out to be excellent, and soon he became a doctor of sciences.
