Couturier Biography
John Galliano was born on November 28, 1960 in Gibraltar. His father is English and his mother is Spanish. In 1966, the family moved to South London, at which time the future notorious fashion designer turned 6 years old. His mother was a housewife and devoted all her time to the family, she taught her son flamenco and dressed up in sophisticated outfits for any occasion.
Galliano was educated at the College of Art and Design of St. Martin. As a student, he worked as a dresser in the British National Theater, where he became interested in the theme of historical costumes and was inspired by the idea to create a diploma collection based on the French Revolution. His graduation work, entitled "Les Incroyables" ("Incredible") was a huge success. Galliano soon founded his own label, with the support of various sponsors. His collections were dramatic, but for several years they did not bring him income. Couturier went bankrupt in 1990.
Galliano tried to get on his feet for several years and released new collections until he received support from Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of the American edition of Vogue, and Andre Leon Talley, creative director of Vogue. They introduced him to the Portuguese fashion patron, Sao Schlumberger, who allowed Galliano to use her mansion to display the Fallen Angels collection, and several top models worked for free. The collection, which was a huge success, was created from one fabric, but it was full of extravagance and luxury. As a result, the couturier paid attention. Galliano was appointed Chief Designer at Givenchy in 1995, becoming the first British fashion designer to lead the French haute couture house. Two years later, he moved to work at Christian Dior. The work methods of an extravagant fashion designer are unique. Each of his collections is a story with its heroes (Lucretia Borgia, Napoleon and Josephine, Rudolf Nureyev, Scarlett O'Hara, Louise Brooks). Galliano loves to experiment with historical outfits and is inspired by style icons - the finest representatives of the era.
Galliano was named the best designer of the year in 1987, 1994, 1995 and 1997, and in 2008 he won the distinguished badge of the Knight of the Legion of Honor for his contribution to the development of the fashion industry. Earlier similar awards were awarded to Ralph Lauren and Karl Lagerfeld.
In 2011, Galliano hit the headlines due to inappropriate behavior. The British tabloid The Sun has published a video about Galliano making anti-Semitic remarks to Italian tourists in a Parisian bar. He was arrested by the police, and many condemned the fashion designer for the act. His behavior has become a hot topic, and is being discussed far beyond the fashion world. Galliano was fired from the Christian Dior fashion house. Two years after the scandalous incident, the fashion designer returned to work. He was invited to his Fashion House by the American fashion designer Oscar de la Renta and created the conditions for the implementation of his extraordinary projects, and in 2015, Galliano led the fashion house Maison Margiela, as a creative director.
