In essence, a monastery is a monastery, but with a strict charter and a different routine. Usually, strict living and living conditions are intentionally observed here, and internal rules are much tougher than in monasteries.

But there are exceptions. In some monasteries, certain rules are developed for parishioners to visit the territory, when people can join the spiritual, pray, worship the shrines.
The history of the Russian hermitages
After the split of the Orthodox Church in Russia, many monastic settlements appeared, away from the "unrighteous" new church. Such settlements were located in dense forests, often in marshy areas, the choice of location was not accidental, the churchmen imposed zealously on the new rules, and therefore real persecution of the Old Believers and apostates began in the country.
Such settlements, most likely, began to be called from the word "to wander, " since the Old Believers wandered in search of secluded places to live and worship.
Skitsky deserts - a place of pilgrimage for Egyptian monks. This place is the progenitor of monasticism as such. It is believed that the monasteries in Russia got their name from the word skiŠµte - the name of the desert area.
