Ship history
The frigate Admiral Essen belongs to the patrol ships of project 11356 in its type and class of ships. It is part of a series of 6 ordered ships, which, according to two contracts of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation with the Yantar shipbuilding company, must be part of the Russian Navy until 2020 of the year.
The construction of the Admiral Essen began on July 8, 2011 on the slipway of the Yantar plant in Kaliningrad under serial number 01358. The finished frigate was launched on November 7, 2014 and received tail number 751.
The ship received its name in honor of the great naval commander of the Russian Empire, Admiral Nikolai Ottovich von Essen (1860-1915). This military leader practically revived the Baltic Fleet after the Tsushima tragedy, and during the First World War he was appointed its commander.
The frigate Admiral Essen began to undergo factory tests on October 28, 2015. And already on November 5, 2015, he first sailed for sea. State tests of the new ship began on January 30, 2016, and on March 23, as part of their conduct, the ship left the Leningrad Naval Base of the Baltic Fleet. The invisible frigate with a full crew on board went into the open sea to complete the inter-naval transition to the Russian Navy base in the Northern Fleet.
According to the plan, on April 4, 2016, the ship arrived in the Northern Fleet for test firing. As part of the tests, a transition was made from the North-East region of the Atlantic as part of a group of ships under the command of the large anti-submarine ship Vice Admiral Kulakov. The crew of Admiral Essen during this time worked out joint maneuvering of ships, checked the frigate’s communication systems, as well as the radio and navigation aids of the new ship.
As part of state trials, the Admiral Essen fired in various weapons systems in the Barents Sea. And as a result, on April 15, 2016, he successfully completed state tests.
The transfer of the ship to the Russian Navy was first scheduled for May 26, 2016, but the day before it was suddenly announced the need for additional testing of the vessel. As a result, the transfer of the guard frigate Admiral Essen to the fleet and the rise at the flagpole of the Russian Navy took place on June 7, 2016.
The ship took its place among the ships of the Russian fleet and received the home port of Sevastopol. In October 2017, the tail number was replaced by 490.
